Potted History
Radio Lion began in 1968 by three sporting enthusiasts. Following a well-rehearsed experimental show, donations of equipment and records marked the beginning of regular programmes to St Luke's Hospital. In 1991, Radio Lion moved to purpose built studios at the Royal Surrey County Hospital. Studio 1 was refurbished in 2005 and studio 2 was refurbished in 2006.

Introduction
Radio Lion aim to enhance the stay of patients at the Royal Surrey County Hospital by providing "a friend on the wireless". Our motto is "always by your side". Radio Lion are affiliated to Guildford Lions Club.

Ward Visiting
Some patients may not have seen friends or family for days or even weeks. The job of Radio Lion members is to talk to patients with the aim of brightening up their day. Ward visiting is very important as it helps us stay in touch with the patients and understand the music they want to hear. All our presenting team are required to ward visit.

Training
Training is key to our professional high quality broadcasting. Our training schedule is enjoyed at a personal pace gaining expertise and skills in presenting and production. All trainees experience at least three months training in the studios and around the wards.

Programming
Our programming is diverse and varied offering popular music, speech and information. Patient interaction is the most important aspect of our programmes airing requests and dedications. To add a unique touch, presenters supplement programmes with their own taste in music.

Outside Broadcasts
Getting out and about makes for a fun time at Radio Lion. Every year we attend various local events including Guilfest, Wood Street Village Show, Guildford Lion's Easter Show, Surrey County Show and many more!

Social Events
Radio Lion continuously offer a range of exciting social events and all members are encouraged to become involved. They include meals, quizzes, barbeques and local trips.

Fundraising
Radio Lion is a charity and members are required to help raise money to keep the station running. Past and present fundraising initiatives include bucket collecting, car boot sales, extended broadcasts, raffles and donkey derbies to name just a few!

General Meetings
To allow communication and feedback of progress between members, meetings are held generally every two months. Members are expected to attend at least half the meetings each year with attendance especially important at fire training and the annual general meeting (AGM).

Membership
There is an annual fee for members set for 2008/2009 at £20 for the first year and £10 thereafter. This includes broadcasting, ward visiting, fundraising, attending meetings, social activities and assisting with the running of the station. Due to insurance reasons, our minimum age of membership is 16. We are unable to offer work experience.

Commitment
Before you become a member of Radio Lion, you should consider if you have enough time and enthusiasm to offer a strong commitment. Members typically spend around three hours per week offering their assistance at Radio Lion. It is expected that you are a member for at least a year to justify the time spent by volunteers on your training. If you are unable to commit yourself fully, you need not apply.
